Black is the hardest color to keep clean my current car is black and its going to be the last black car I will own in my life. Like the OP said every little scratch swirl will be visible. What I recommend is buffing the car and putting sealant on it. Sealant will last longer then wax.

It's not the product you use, but how you use. Two bucket system for washing, one with soapy water, one to rinse the dirt off your sponge/wash cloth. You don't want to put dirt into your soapy water because that's the water that's going right on to your car. Anything you use to dry or apply/take off product has to be completely clean. If anything falls onto the floor, it is DONE. Don't let it near your car until it has been thoroughly washed, and I don't mean in your bucket of soapy water.

Gray shows dirt. I would know. My wife's Jetta was gray. Silver and white are going to be the best bet if you just don't want to see it.

I've had both black on my previous cars (s13 240sx, and Audi B5 A4) and white on my current car (E46 M3) and though I love the white, when clean and taken care of properly, nothing beats a nice, black paint job.

I use to wash my s13 3 times a week, minimum, but it was a spray off at a local car wash with the pressure washer, not touching the paint what so ever with any sponges, mitts, etc.

Once every two weeks, i'd set aside a day to wash and wax the car. I'd use the 2 bucket solution, which you would be suprised the difference that alone makes. Afterwards, I'd bust out the Porter Cable and wax the complete car with McGuires Show finish high gloss wax. Twice during the summer, I would do a full 3 step system, Once at the beginning of the year (April/May) and again around the end of July/August. That would be a complete strip of the old wax, use some 3m fine cut compound to take out any swirls, then seal it with some 3m polish (Hand glaze I think it's called), then a coat of Mothers pure carnuba wax afterwards.

Doing that, really gave the black what it deserves. The white on my M3, although it's very fresh looking, and doesn't require much maintaining, a spray off here and there makes it look good, it doesn't have the same appeal as the black, although with the M3, I feel the white looks best on it being more of a sport/luxury car.

If I do decide to buy a gen coupe, it will be black, because when it comes to a 2 door sports car, nothing will beat a nice show, black finish, especially showing off the gen coupe's curvy body lines. You just have to know how to take care of the finish.

I have a 7424xp, I 2 bucket wash, and know how to detail and my paint still blows ass. All rain etches the shitty paint/clear they hyundai used. I will never buy a black hyundai again.

EDIT: and I have owned other black cars, but this paint wins for being the shittiest and toughest to take care of.

My black GC 3.8GT came with a special "paint protection" from the dealer. It guarantees my paint job for 10 years from bird droppings, acid rain etc. Plus I'm never supposed to wax it as this may strip off the protection.

So far just wash and wipe with a micro fibre cloth and it looks glossy.

With my previous black car I waxed it 2X per year fall and spring and in between I used Lucas Slick Mist This stuff works on paint, chrome, glass - just spray it on ( washed car ) and wipe it off and you have a wet looking finish in about 10 mins! Awesome product.

Winter here in southern Ontario isn't too bad however we do use salt on the roads so it makes keeping the black car clean a challenge.

Will not go through a car wash except for the "touch less wash" places just to get the salt and grime off.

Also I never use a brush in those do it yourself bays as some people leave them covered in grit. The paint protection I got is supposed to guarantee against rusting as well.

It will stay in my garage when not driven and that should help keep it cleaner too. In about 4 years I will be looking to get a new GC maybe by then they will have a V8 one! Can't drive a white car a little too feminine... Just kidding. Colour / style is a choice and everyone has their own likes and dislikes.
